classes stripped out?

I am able to added classesItems - but after saving, the classes are gone. Likewise, if I toggleHTML and manually add a class to a paragraph for example, it is stripped out upon saving. What is the setting to allow classes? I can't find in the docs.

And, a somewhat related question. In the customization examples, why are the css selectors in the form ".border img" or ".important p" ... shouldn't it be "img.border" and "p.important" ?
