You've done great solution!
Perhaps we just missing one little thing. There is no option to set a target attribute in add/edit link dialog window.

We also find that WYMeditor automatically delete a target attribute after switching from html view.

This issue have been discussed here several times already! Please have a look around the forum, there are several possible workarounds.
